Seasonal invitations

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

Aside from clothing seasons probably one of the more confusing aspects of modern marketing is seasonal invitation cards.

For instance, although we’re in the midst of summer Halloween party invitations are already starting to hit the shelves. Well, perhaps not the shelves just yet but they’re popping up on the Internet sites these days.

Personally speaking, we’re far too disorganised to even think about Halloween ’til at least early October but obviously if you’re thinking of organising a party for it you need to start the planning for that a good deal in advance.

Just what DO you need to do to lose weight?

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

All being well, I’ll be starting a human biology course this coming October and I’ve started reading over the first of the books which covers, amongst other things, obesity.

What I really love is the statement in it that says that to lose weight “all” you have to do is to ensure that your Total Energy Intake (TEI) is less than your Total Energy Expenditure (TEE). Whilst that’s obviously true, it doesn’t work too well for most of us!

However, that simplistic statement in the book is a good place to start. For instance, one way to increase your TEE is through the use of fat burners which basically make your body work a little bit harder. Likewise you can look towards appetite suppressants to reduce your TEI.

Hopefully I’ll pick up a few more useful ideas from the book as I get through it.

Fitness terminology

Saturday, July 4th, 2009

Although we’ve been going to the gym for a few months now, we’ve just been working our way around the various bits of equipment without bothering to find out what they’re called.

Sure, there’s the running machine but is that one that has your legs and arms all going at once called a ski-ing machine? On the weights side of things I just assumed that there were “weights” full-stop until recently but it seems that the weird looking thing that I’ve seen the really serious people working with is called a Kettlebell which sounds obviousl now that I’ve heard the name but before that I’d never even of thought of it having a name!

Isn’t it strange just how much you can be “into” something but not know anything about the terminology that it uses?
