The business of postcard printing is pretty simple these days. Basically you just need to pick out a suitable image, add some wording (including your contact details obviously), upload it and a matter of days later you’ll be set to start selling your postcards.

Incidentally, don’t be thinking that you can give them away as a great marketing ploy. As with all marketing, there’s generally only a 1% return so even if your postcards only cost 10p that would mean that bookings brought in that way would cost around £10. Not disastrously bad if people only take one but don’t leave a whole stack of them in each room.

What on earth would it be like if there was another mini iceage like they had in the 1800s when the Thames was regularly frozen?

Ironically, it would probably be a whole lot easier going. The reason for many of the problems this year is simply that the UK as a whole simply isn’t prepared for really cold weather. Were it to be a regular feature of our climate then more money would be thrown at the problem and many of the difficulties that we’re currently experiencing would go away. After all, colder countries don’t have all these issues.

Since the kids are at school now we need to fit our holidays around the school breaks so as we’re in the midst of the Halloween break right now we thought we’d have a go at getting away for a few days before they’ve to go back. Ideally we’d have planned it all out of course but the September to October period has been particularly hectic for us so we only really had a chance to start thinking about it when the holiday actually started.

That means short break of course. Probably a few days. And, naturally, one that doesn’t involve a whole lot of travel.

Our thinking at the moment is the Republic of Ireland though we’re drawn towards Scotland too. Where-ever it turns out to be, it’ll need to be shorted sharpish.

Thus, we’ve been putting £50 in the Post Office travel money card fairly regularly over the last few months with a view to using it to pay for our holiday in due course. Granted, I’m not getting the very best exchange rate at any given time doing this but what it does let me do is to pop £50 in and average out the exchange rate that I’m getting. That’s effectively taking the exchange rate risk out of the equation for me at very little additional cost.

Somewhat more economical on the exchange rate front would be FairFX which lets you put in small amounts too but I find that popping it into the Post Office is handier.

The physical things are easy enough to identify and though they’re a bit of a pain to do they need doing before everything is put away or you’ll just have a whole heap of trouble next time you try to use the stuff. Where it’s less obvious is for the intangible things like motorhome insurance which is something that’s very easily forgotten about but, if anything, even more important than getting the lawnmower cleaned.

Quite how that came about is basically down to our ongoing attempts to get the French property sold. Essentially without that sold we can’t really go anywhere as we need to be around if/when a buyer does come along thus planning anything much in advance is very difficult. With our luck we’d be off on a long haul holiday and come back to find that a buyer with a suitcase full of notes had been at our door whilst we were away but had now changed their mind

Somehow I think the “no holiday” feeling will eventually get to us and we’ll head off somewhere though with the weather as it is at the moment we’d probably end up stuck inside unless we go a fair old distance to catch the sun.

It’s so common now that it’s hardly even mentioned on the news and it looks like the only way to know for sure whether your flight is on is to call the airport. Even then, the other week that didn’t even work as some airports listed as closed had flights during at least part of the day.

There neither seems to be an end in sight of this nor does there seem to be any move towards consistency in reporting what’s happening. If it were anything else, you’d have seen a website set up to collect together all the information but that hasn’t happened yet, probably because a) it continually looks like it might be over soon and b) nobody seems to have the full picture of closures.

The only clear certainty in all this is that it would be crazy to even think about any holiday this summer that involved flying anywhere.

Daft as it may seem some people will be sitting in front of their computer screen as soon as Boxing Day booking their destin hotel and so you’ll find that your own choice of accommodation may well be gone and if it isn’t the price will be somewhat higher than it is right now.

The only problem is that the sale is taking so darned long that I think the kids have given up hope of ever getting to Disneyworld. Not that it’s stopped them nagging us about it, of course!

Planning has even went so far as us getting one of those US$ prepaid cards for the initial expenses whilst we’re there. At the rate the sale is progressing though it’s likely to have expired before we get there

It’s an unusual problem in that most holiday destinations have a fairly tight focus on activities thus if you’re at a normal beach resort place there are, by and large, just beach type activities to do. In the Orlando area though there’s no such tight focus and you’ll find everything from the beach activities, through wilderness spots to the many theme parks dotted around the area.

You might think that too much choice isn’t a problem but it unless you’re going on holiday by yourself. Try it with a family and you can easily find that everyone wants to go somewhere different. Thus, unless your vacation time and budget is unlimited you’re best to plan out where you’ll be going in advance and avoid arguments about the selection of places when you get there.
